A management consultant, a freelance online marketer, and an IT expert walk into a bar. This bar is now a coworking space. Joke aside (was that even a joke?), almost everyone has a general idea of who usually occupies coworking spaces. But are they really just freelancers? Are the members mostly extroverted? And does a coworking space actually boost your productivity?
Coworking Spaces: A Trend with a Future
The trend towards flexible work environments and work models has grown significantly since the pandemic. Consequently, coworking spaces have become increasingly popular. It’s not surprising, as coworking spaces combine the cozy vibes of a home office with the professional infrastructure of an office. Add in the all-in service and a motivating community, and it’s clear why this work environment attracts more and more people.
The popularity of coworking spaces is not only due to the fact that members work more productively in flexible environments. Another reason is that, according to a GCUC survey, 89% of respondents are happier since they started working in a coworking space. It’s no wonder that the number of coworking spaces worldwide is projected to grow from 19,000 in 2019 to around 26,000 by 2025.
Money, Money, Money
We are 100% convinced that coworking spaces not only make you more productive and happier but also create important business synergies. This claim is supported by 80% of respondents in the GCUC survey, who said they have expanded their business network. Additionally, 64% see coworking networking as an important source for new projects. Catching!
Coworking Members Insights
Look to your left and now to your right – who’s sitting next to you in the coworking space? Could it be a freelancer?
The likelihood is quite high that you or your neighbor are freelancers, as according to a Deskmag study, 43% of members in coworking spaces worldwide are hardworking freelancers. Entrepreneurs also love the coworking vibe, with around 16% of members being businesswomen and businessmen.
Coworking spaces are no longer just an open area and a kitchen. The trend is moving towards hybrid models with flex areas (flexible workspace), fixed desks (personally reserved desks), and private office offerings. More and more companies are discovering the benefits of private offices and enjoy the combination of flexible workspaces, a community, and privacy.
Coworking Members Professions
Members in IT professions continue to be the largest occupational group in coworking spaces (19%). The areas of PR, marketing, sales, advertising, and communication are also strongly represented, making up about 12% of members. So, if you have a marketing or IT question, you have a good chance of getting a competent answer. (Or are you yourself in these fields?) Additionally, we must not forget consultants at 10%, as well as those with an eye for function, aesthetics, and design (9%).
Personality Types in Coworking Spaces
Okay, now it gets personal. In a Deskmag survey, coworking space members were asked to classify themselves into three broad personality groups: extroverted, introverted, and ambivert (a mix of both).
What do you think the majority identified as? Extroverted, perhaps? According to the survey, 47% of members consider themselves ambiverts. Thus, the myth that coworking spaces are only for extroverted people is debunked! (By the way: we hope no one thought that anyway). About 30% of coworking members see themselves as extroverted, and 23% as introverted.
